[attr="class","info-title"]The History of Niphios
[attr="class","info-post"]Origin
A vast continent consisting of lush plains, plentiful forests, sandy beaches, and snowy peaks, Niphios is a land of prosper.
Nearly three thousand years ago, Niphios was broken up into sections under the governance of tribal communities. There, they grew crops, hunted for food, and fought to protect their borders. A great war broke out between the tribes, and bloodshed spread throughout the land. The grass turned red, and the skies turned dark.
The fighting ceased as Arceus descended from the stormy skies, a holy light shining behind him. Their voice boomed as the divine being called for the leaders of each tribe to kneel before Them. It was on that day Arceus mandated a new way to live, crowning the leader of the strongest tribe as King. All of Niphios was his Arceus-given right, and tribes quickly fell in line.
Or so the story goes.
The Weqaening Dynasty
During the first three hundred years, Niphios had little development. There was unrest among the tribes. Some learned their place and swore loyalty to the King. Others refused the new hierarchy and rebelled, underestimating the new King. The tribe leaders were publicly executed, and the King personally appointed the next leaders.
The tribe leaders eventually formed a council and held meetings every few months with the King to discuss the current state of affairs and plead cases. A standard currency was established, using bronze, copper, silver and gold in which the actual value of the metal depended on the size. Generations passed, and the royal family proved to be weak.
The Maiweth Dynasty
They considered the royal family to be chosen by Arceus themself, so when the current King Weqaening and his family was slain, no one wanted to crown the Pokemon who attempted to seize power. The Toxicroak at fault forcibly held power in Niphios for only thirty years, beginning a brief period that even historians hesitate to consider a new era.
Tentatively crowned King Maiweth, Niphios fell into a great depression as taxes were raised. Smaller tribes starved as they were forced to sell most of their crops in order to pay off debt, and those that still could not were forced to pay through labor.
The Shenia Dynasty
It is said that Arceus visited a young maiden, an Alcremie, in her dreams and tasked her with overthrowing the tyrant on the throne. Despite the disadvantage of typing and status, she came to work at the palace as a maid. She seduced King Maiweth and earned his favor, allowing her more freedoms around the castle. She gathered supporters behind his back, and, through their help, overthrew the tyrant king. He was sentenced to death by Guillotine while the maiden, Arceus's Chosen, was crowned Queen Shenia.
Nipios entered a period of enlightenment and underwent dozens of reforms. Many of the tribes merged together and settled around the small castle that held the royal family. Generations passed as the small town expanded.
The Crovalon Dynasty
Queen Jingshou was the last of the Shenia bloodline to sit on the throne. Invaders from overseas took Niphios by surprise, disrupting a time of peace with war. They were quickly overwhelmed and the royal family was captured and brought before the very citizens they ruled. Each and every last Shenia was killed before their people. The foreign army placed their banners and forced the crowd to part, making way for an armored Rapidash. Yet the fanfare was not for the Rapidash. On their back was a regal dragon with golden scales, one not native to Niphios at the time.
He was a Kommo-o.
His Highness, Charnabon Crovalon.
Having been sent by his father to conquer foreign lands, Niphios had been nothing more than a stepping stone. The idea was to dethrone the royal family and bring the land under his father's rule, but Charnabon had other plans. The third in line for the throne, it was more ideal to seize the opportunity presented before him: take the crown and rule over Niphios.
This went against everything the people of Niphios believed. As history reminded them, a ruler not chosen by Arceus could only be a tyrant who would lead Niphios into ruin. Yet, they were powerless to stop him.
While history tries to paint Charnabon in a bad light, they cannot argue that Niphios was mistreated under his rule. Punishments were harsh, and a mere whisper of ill will against the King was met with zero toleration. Yet the economy flourished, the town infrastructure was upgraded, and poverty levels were at an all time low. Using architectural influence from his motherland, Charnabon began a multi-decade project to rebuild the town. They expanded outwards, building with stone rather than wood for sturdier support.
The final touch was a massive wall, a barrier that encompassed the whole city to protect them from outside threats. Guard towers sprouted from the ground and reached high into the sky, allowing view to all four corners of Niphios. The rundown castle was torn down and rebuilt, creating an expansive palace that became the prized jewel of Niphios.
And it was named Colbagne.
Charnabon ruled for nearly two centuries, thanks to the longevity of his kind. Stepping down was not on his agenda, not after preparing Niphios for the worst that was to come. He had to be dethroned by his very son, too greedy and impatient to wait for him to pass on by natural means.
Another century passed with King Áedán Crovalon on the throne. The people of Niphios loved him, when he announced his father's death and the dream that Arceus had gifted to him. He was Arceus's Chosen, the rightful heir to the throne.
Or so the story goes.
The threat that his father had been preparing for finally arrived as a grand ball was held for the King's birthday. Signal fires were lit across all the guard towers, and the palace was placed on lockdown as all of the soldiers on reserve were dispatched to the walls. In the dark of the night, a single light could be seen on the horizon. It steadily grew larger and larger until it could be identified: a fireball.
The guard sprung into action as their water squadron aimed a multitude of Hydro Pumps and Hydro Cannons at the fireball. The sky erupted with a thick cloud of steam. The immediate threat had been neutralized, but there was no time for celebration.
Hidden by the steam, they could not see the fleet of armored flying and dragon Pokemon before it was too late.
Once again, Colbagne felt the tides of war. Their enemy? King Crovalon's grandfather. The Crovalon motherland had finally come to stake its claim on what they believed to be rightfully theirs.
The Gaiteuil Dynasty
War filled Niphios for three years. Their defenses were strong, despite the King's neglect, yet they would not have lasted as long as they had if it had not been for the civilians stepping up. As their soldiers tired, the very citizens they were trying to protect began to rush into battle. Bakers, farmers, construction workers--they were not fit for the battlefield, yet they pressed forth to protect their homeland.
The foreign forces retreated only when their King finally decided that Niphios was not worth the cost. Fighting overseas was pricey, and the greedy dragon settled for sending his forces to smaller islands and weaker kingdoms.
When the dust had settled, Colbagne was worse for wear. Parts of the city were crumbling or in ruins from fighting, and the streets were stained with red. Throughout the duration of the war, they had experienced all forms of natural calamities. Tornadoes ripped through the plains, forcing the fliers out of the sky. Earthquakes shook the continent and sent a tsunami to the shore, destroying the ships in the harbor.
They believed it to be a sign from Arceus, that They were on their side. When the rains came after a year of drought, washing away the blood after the enemy's retreat, they said Arceus wept for the fallen.
The trust in Crovalon had fallen with the war. Arceus's Chosen or not, the people rallied and overthrew the King. They crowned the general that had prevailed and proven himself during the war, capturing the hearts of the masses in a time of need. Thus began the era of Gaiteuil.
It took a long time to recover from the war. Buildings were rebuilt, the wall was reinforced, and a Gallade by the name of Aldéric Delacroix purchased the guard tower that had received the most damage. From its ruins, a new opportunity was born. He established the Guild, an organization whose mission was to help those in need and explore the farthest reaches of their land. It was a ray of hope for a civilization recovering from war.
Colbagne continued to expand as power changes hands. The Guild grew in renown, its leading family thrust into nobility as they forged closer ties with the royal family and its guard. Distant lands were explored, resources discovered. They opened their trading ports once more, having waited decades for the scars of war to heal.
Generations passed, and Niphios continued to weather everything Arceus threw at them. Drought withered their crops for two years before dramatically ending with a monsoon that threatened to sweep everything in the western region to sea. An expedition to the Frozen Rise ended in failure, taking the Delacroix heiress with it. Then came a period of seeming calm that lasted for over a decade.
It ended with the assassination of King Jeannot II. The falsely accused stood on the gallows, sentenced to death before the real killer left a little gift to the gates of the palace, taunting them for their failure before all traces disappeared completely. The case went cold, yet they tried to raise morale with the swift coronation of the Crown Prince.
Another expedition, another tragedy. The Guild Master was gone without a trace. His heir stepped down as the General of the Royal Guard to take his father's place over the Guild.
Then came the priestess, there one moment and gone the next. Upon the second winter since, Pokemon began to fall from the sky. The Guild was dispatched without wasting a moment, sending teams out to collect the Pokemon of unknown origin.
