Anatole is a travelling salesmon that runs a 'special requests' stall; aside for the general goods for any aspiring adventurer, customers can request certain items that are found within dungeons, and Anatole will go and retrieve them for a fair price. A 'mon looking to break free from his old life by abandoning his family name, Anatole strives to live independently on his own two feet (er, claws).
[break][break]He's a bit gruff and rough around the edges (despite being made of smooth, shiny metal), but despite his general dry tone and informal way of speaking, these traits belie a 'mon with healing internal scars, who is empathetic to those who are suffering, honest with those he believes deserve it, and never backs down from what he believes is right.[break][break]

Anatole's friend list could be counted with one metal pincer; which, if you ever tried to count with metal pincers, you would understand how difficult it is.

But when you have an acerbic personality, it tends to be an occupational hazard. Anatole's not the easiest to befriend, and if you ask him, it's easier that way. Clients are easier to handle; they come in, perform a transaction, and leave. Short, simple, to the point. Digestible, comes with no baggage. No chance of getting hurt that way. He's sure everyone's happier that way.[break][break]
However, as is the plight of most 'mons who try to keep others at arm's length, it's quite a lonely existence. And when you've went through the motions so many times, it's hard to step outside of the habit to form connections.[break][break]
Despite what he might tell you, he's definitely not against friendship. Those looking to be friends with this grumpy fellow should first see that he's more bark than bite; persistence is the key here. Anatole is used to others staying away after they've finished a transaction or his winning personality makes them leave, so for people who aren't bothered by that, you'll find he... doesn't quite know how to handle it. You'll also find him to be a bit less abrasive.[break][break]
It'll be after a handful of meetings, however. Due to things happening in his early life, trust doesn't come easy.[break][break]
Certain traits in a 'mon tend to catch his interest easier than others, though. 'mons who can match his sarcasm and go verbally toe to toe with him, for example, or those who won't put up with his, uh... Tauros leavings. Those who know when to give him space and not push for companionship are also a plus.

Honestly, Anatole would be surprised to hear if he doesn't have enemies. Or at least a list of 'mons who don't like him. He knows how to make a sale and is darn good at his job of retrieving items, but that doesn't translate to an agreeable personality. By default, this is what he expects from people; being curt and to the point with requests usually puts off those looking for any deeper conversation, and he'll wave them off and get back to work handling his business (children, interestingly enough, get a pass when it comes to sticking around).[break][break]
Anatole, however, isn't in the business of giving attention to those who don't like him, finding it to be a waste of valuable time. Even if there's someone looking to square up, he would work to de-escalate to the point of avoiding a fight, and even then Anatole at best would just be annoyed. You'd think that with his grumpiness he would be easy to tick off, but no, it would take a bit more than that to make him truly angry.[break][break]
Those unlucky enough incur his wrath would find that, while he may not be in the business of starting fights, he will absolutely finish them. Few things in this world make him very angry, and all of them generally have to do with criminals. Anyone he see trying to start trouble for the sake of it, anyone he see trying to screw over someone innocent for their own personal gain... that will get Anatole from 0 to 100 real fast. While most issues would have Anatole try to shut down the situation with words, these situations would have Anatole stepping in to the defense of the weaker 'mon. He remembers what it was like to feel weak and helpless, and as long as he got the breath in his lungs, that's not going to happen to anyone else while he's in the area.

Oh boy. It probably goes without saying that this option is inaccessible to those who are not in a friendship with Anatole prior. It will not even be a thought that occurs in his mind unless the foundation of trust and companionship have been set.[break][break]
It comes to the surprise of a lot of people to hear that Anatole has been in a relationship before. Many years ago, when he was younger, softer to the world, his base personality without scar tissue more apparent. Back when he loved more freely, without fear of a loved one breaking his trust. With certain events in his past revealing horrible truths, however, it ended messily, and his heart became hardened. But for those who work their way past his barriers, they'll find remnants of the same gentle soul deep inside.[break][break]
When Anatole loves, he loves hard. There's not many (or any, really) that he can count in his circle of friends, so for those who have received the honor to be considered such, that he trusts to be close to his heart, they are especially cherished. You will find no one more loyal, no one more willing to fall on the blade for you. For the one he holds above all others, while he'll be a lot more open, he'll also be prone to being easily embarrassed by the whole thing. Not enough to resist the urge to be as close as possible, but still. Anatole would be ridiculously easy to fluster.[break][break]
Those looking to woo the crimson bug will find that they're 7/10ths of the way there once they've secured his friendship. To be considered for something more, certain traits will help give an extra push. Anatole admires 'mons who fight for what they believe in, who are strong, both physically and mentally. Who smacks him out of his melancholy and refuse to let him delve too deep, who makes him want to be better. He admires those who are still gentle despite how harsh the world can be, who held onto the optimism that he lost.
