Come mid-spring, the people of Niphios look forward to Nou Rega, a week long festival that fills the streets of Colbagne with paper lanterns and the smell of food. Festival Plaza is packed with stalls selling food or offering games with prizes. Lanterns are tightly hung high above the stalls, concealing the sky except for the very center of the plaza where a statue, made of marble and decorated with fresh white roses, lilies, and gladioli, depicts Arceus, Xerneas, and Yveltal. A large plaque at the bottom of the statue summarizes the ancient legend of how Arceus created the cycle of Life and Death and how Death grew jealous of Arceus' favoritism toward Life to the point where Death sought to destroy Life. Arceus, initially hoping Their children would make peace on their own, was forced to step in to restore balance by sealing Life and Death away, one in a tree and the other within a cocoon.
The statue is only displayed during the festival, and it is removed the day after the festivities conclude.
Nou Rega is meant to honor life and death. Offerings are laid at the statue in the center of the plaza, and families flock to the cemetery to leave food, flowers, and burn incenses for their late loved ones. From Sunday to Saturday, it is mandated that all work places allow their employees at least one day off to pay their respects to the deceased. Most places will stagger days off while some businesses shut down completely for the festival.
On the final day (Saturday), the gates to the castle open up and invite all citizens to join the royal family for the Cycle of Life Ball. Security is heightened during this time with the Royal Guard stationed within the ballroom to keep an eye on the main event while other guards and volunteering Guild members patrol the rest of the castle.
At precisely midnight that night, the lanterns in the plaza are cut loose, and everyone gathers to watch them float away. Extra lanterns are sold at various stalls so individuals or families can send off their own paper lanterns. Many say if you write your wish on your lantern and send it to the sky, Arceus will grant it.
