Not many pokemon can claim to know much of the island of Merasque. Perhaps they've heard the name in passing conversation or have seen it on a map but the isolationist policies of the republic make it hard to gather information on the elusive island. [break][break]

The island country of Merasque is, on the surface, quite idyllic. Alchemy is a highly prized skill and as such the country hosts a larger-than-average population of artificial pokemon such as Porygon, Voltorb and Magnemite. Psychic, Grass and Fairy type pokemon enjoy a life of privilege while Fighting, Ghost and Dark-types are treated as second class citizens - ostensibly due to their more violent natures. Merasque values peace, conformity and sacrifice - pokemon who do not fit this ideal often find themselves as outcasts. [break][break]

The life of a Merasque citizen is planned from childhood until their inevitable death. Children are evaluated by powerful psychics to determine the career they are most suited to. They begin training for these duties as young as seven years old. The thirteenth birthday is celebrated by a coming of age ritual that culminates in the betrothal of the child with the most compatible partner.[break][break]

The Society is a combination of secret police and Government-sponsored intelligence agency. Every citizen of Merasque knows of the existence of the Society though only a few could claim to know anything about them or their methods. Propaganda about the Society is common whether it is reminding pokemon that they're being watched of claiming that the Society is necessary for the safety of the people.[break][break]

There are many branches of the Society. They have little to do with each other - Often, a Society member knows nothing about the daily activities of the other branches. They are made with the express purpose of running with little interference from the others - if one Branch is compromised, the others will survive.[break][break]

The Genesis Project is the branch that Beta belongs to - an organization comprised primarily of Dittos and the psychics that serve as their handlers. Dittos are artificially created in batches of twenty-four. From birth they are trained to fulfill the role set ahead of them.[break][break]

The most common task for a Genesis ditto is to take on the role of a spouse for a powerful pokemon. They are inserted into the person's life and seduce them - from that point on, they report on their spouse's activity to the Society. In extreme circumstances, they are required to assassinate problematic public figures and assume their identity.[break][break]

A Genesis Ditto is expected to have loyalty only to the Society. Personal feelings of love or attachment are a liability when they could be ordered to kill family members and return to Genesis for a reassignment.[break][break]

When I'm tired of all this garbage they keep selling me on T.V. about the Communist plan. And all these shady preachers are beggin' for my cash.
