Colbagne was...big. At least it was to her eyes. Summer's old gang had lived a more "rustic" life than this, sleeping in dens dug out from the earth, or under the stars. She remembered how they would scoff at people like this, townies they often called them. People who were too soft to hack it in the wild, so they made the wild around them soft instead. Yet despite this prejudice, she couldn't help but stare with wide eyes at the silouhette of the city before her. Spires of pearly stone reached to the sky among shingled roofs and windows made of colored glass. It was a beautiful sight, yet also an alien, intimidating one. Could she really make a life here? She didn't even know for sure whether the Guild would take her. What if she wasn't strong enough to join? What if they laughed at her? What if they threw her out? What if they saw her for what she was, a barbarian brigand playing at heroism? What if, what if?
The Houndoom's orange-furred throat flashed as she swallowed nervously, her arrowhead tail flicking about her hocks. Her stomach felt like it was twisting into knots. She had trekked across the entirety of the kingdom to stand here, before the gate of the guildhall, and yet in that moment she wanted nothing more than to turn tail and scurry away. Maybe her brother had been right, then, she thought ruefully. Too cowardly to ever commit, whether that commitment was to robbing a caravan or enlisting with the explorers guild.
For a few moments more, she remained frozen in place. Then, she lifted a slightly-trembling paw, and took a step. Then another. And another. And another, and another, up to the heavy wooden doors. She had come too far to chicken out now. Another deep breath to steady herself, and she dipped her head, setting her horns against the worn wood, then leaned forward, pushing the door open and slipping inside. A dull thump echoed behind her as it swung shut, leaving her to look around. Inside the guildhall, the air was dusty and cool, and heavy with the scents of numerous species of Pokemon, many of which she didn't recognize. The vagabond hesitated by the door, glancing around with uncertainty. Perhaps, she ought to have asked who was in charge of guild recruitment before actually coming here...

That seemed to be the norm for the past few years, scarcely receiving a break, only to be sucked right back into work. At the very least, he had managed to finish up his paperwork, for once in his life, before lunch. This gave him just enough time to sweep through the tower, stretching his legs as he mingled with passing apprentices and staff.
He had paused in the lobby, standing beside the front desk with a cheerful smile on his lips as he chatted away with the Sunflora on shift. Well, the Sunflora did most of the talking. Quite the chatty type, the flower went on and on about an accessory she saw during an evening stroll through town the day prior. Honestly, he got a little lost in her story, but, from what he could tell, the Sunflora really liked the gemstone used because it was green.
Lavender's attention briefly diverted, and he held up a pale hand to pause the Sunflora mid-sentence. "One moment, please." The receptionist beamed and nodded as the Gardevoir turned to face the front door, mere seconds before it began to creak open. They should really do something about that door; it squeaked when pushed and immediately closed itself soon after. He should assign someone to stand guard at the door so they could at least prop it open.
"Welcome!" His voice chirped as he folded his hands neatly in front of him, back straight, chin up. He strode forward with both natural and trained grace until he stood before the Houndoom that had entered. Nervous, unsure, and definitely not from around these parts. The latter was obvious, even without reading her energy. "Is this your first time visiting the Guild?" It was a rhetorical question; he already knew the answer. What he did not know was if this Houndoom needed to submit a request or if there was something else. Luckily for the hapless Houndoom, she wasn't left to idle and stare about herself for long. Her head raised as a voice, smooth as a river stone, called out. A slender, pale Pokemon was approaching, robelike frills swishing about his legs. It took Summer a moment to recognize the species--Gardevoir weren't a common sight in the hills. He greeted her in a polite yet somewhat rehearsed manner, and she mustered up her courage enough to stand up a little straighter, dipping her head respectfully to him. "Ah--yes, it is...it's a grand place, though." She guessed that she wasn't doing a very good job of hiding her unfamiliarity with the place, but she hoped that would change in time--assuming her request was granted.
"Sir," she began, as her tail once again started its nervous flicking, "My name is Summer. I've come to Colbagne following the stories of this guild, and, well...if you're permitting, I'd like to join up." She wasn't yet entirely sure that this fellow was the head of the guild, but his bearing suggested someone at least moderately important in the hierarchy. The higher-ranking members of her tribe would swagger and strut among their fellows, but she was rapidly discovering how different things were here. She could only hope she would be able to learn fast enough to fit in.

In any other business, limited seats would mean a stricter process to be inducted. However, that was not the way of the guild. They accepted anyone from all walks of life, even if their dorms were full and their badge supply scarce.
Reminder: commission more badges.
But, that was for another time. The polite smile on his face brightened as the Houndoom complimented the guild before immediately introducing herself. Summer was a fitting name for a fire type, though only time would tell if she had as warm of a personality as her name implied. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Summer." His hands unclasped as one lifted to his chest before the Gardevoir bowed. The movement was subtle, lacking the extravagance he might have shown someone like the king. Yet it was enough for the occasion.
"I am Guild Master Lavender Delacroix," he purposefully left off the Lord that should have been attached as well. The title was too long, and Guild Master was sufficient for him. Straightening his posture, he swept to the side the hand that had been poised near his chest. "If you will please follow me," Lavender turned to lead the Houndoom up the nearby stairs.
Down the hall, he stopped at a large wooden door. His eyes began to faintly glow before the sound of a lock turned and the door opened on its own. The office within held a large desk covered in neat stacks of papers before a large window. There was a small sitting area, though the furniture was spaced out, no doubt to accommodate larger Pokemon. "Would you like some tea, miss?" He asked as he stepped inside, immediately beelining to the window before drawing the curtains, letting natural light filter in. The psychic Pokemon's warm expression only seemed to brighten as she made her request, which she dared to take as a good sign. His introduction was just as graceful as his greeting, and the name he gave suited him well, for the only bit of color on him were his pale violet eyes. She nodded eagerly, falling into step behind him as he bid her to follow. The stairs were a bit steep for a quadrupedal Pokemon to scale easily, but she didn't dare fall behind. All the while, she was looking about herself, taking in every detail no matter how seemingly insignificant. She knew what buildings were, of course, but she had never been inside one more than a story high, and from what she could tell, this guildhall was much, much larger than that. How did the residents avoid getting lost?
Speaking of residents, they passed a handful of Pokemon, of various species, on their walk. The Guild Master was greeted without fail, with the occasional curious glance given to the vagabond following him. She suspected hopeful recruits to be a fairly common sight here.
Distracted, she nearly bumped into Lavender as he paused before a large door. A few moments later, she heard the lock turn and watched as the door swung open of its own accord. It was a surprisingly casual use of psychic power, but, she figured, if you had it, why not use it? She followed him inside, studying the room intently. The air carried a scent of dry paper and dust, but was clean and cool. At his offer, she looked back to Lavender. "Oh--yes, please. I've never had it, actually." It was...hot plant water, right? Well, she'd try anything once.
While he busied himself with the curtains, she approached a likely-looking chair, standing next to a small, round-topped table. She set her front paws on the seat, and, with some awkwardness, hopped up and managed to turn herself about before sitting down, letting her tail coil around her paws. Now that she was here, her mind was racing with ways to make her case. She was quick on her feet, she could track, she could travel miles without rest. She...wasn't the best battler, even though she loved to spar. She knew how to make her way through the wilderness, although she had never dared to delve into a dungeon. But whatever task they set her to, she would do her best to complete.

For him, it was as essential as water, though he supposed there was a hefty price tag on a lot of tea leaves out there. "If you do not find it to your liking, try adding sugar or honey." As he said this, a tray lifted from a small table to the right of his desk. It drifted over to the coffee table before gently setting down. On it was a small bowl of sugar cubes and a jar with Combee honey.
Lavender turned to the aforementioned table where a teapot still remained. He lifted the top and peered inside, frowning a little when he found that it was empty. Ah, right, he had finished it off that morning. Well, a fresh brew would be better for company, anyway, especially for someone's first tea experience.
"One moment, please." With the teapot held between his hands, the Gardevoir's form blinked out of view. He returned only a few minutes later in a similar fashion, and only then did he set the teapot onto the table in the sitting area. He turned away and retrieved a pair of flora printed ceramic tea cups, only to pause and realize... Summer could not properly drink from one of these dainty little cups. Putting one back, he grabbed the next best option: a ceramic bowl that would have otherwise been used for anything else. It was clean. It would work.
Setting the bowl before the Houndoom and the cup on the opposite side, Lavender picked up the pot before gently pouring its contents first into the bowl and then the cup. He made sure that the bowl was filled enough to drink from without spilling, though he still expected some form of mess.
"Please, try it," the Gardevoir motioned for Summer to drink as he set the teapot back on the table and sat down on the chair across from her. The tray and its contents were given an inquisitive sniff as an unseen force set them on the table. The honey especially was pleasing to her nose, immediately conjuring up visions of flowers and springtime, but she had already decided to try this tea by itself first. The way Lavender had looked so surprised when she said she had never had it before, it must have been an experience all on its own.
The Houndoom was content to settle down in the chair and study the room as he momentarily excused himself with another flash of psychic power. The guildmaster's quarters appeared to be in a mild state of organized chaos, with towers of papers, books, or maps stacked on every available service. She couldn't begin to guess at what half of them involved, and despite her curiosity she wasn't about to go snooping in his paperwork. Poor fellow certainly appeared to be swamped with work, though.
It wasn't long before he returned, the empty teapot he had been holding now steaming softly. It was set on the tray as well, after which he retrieved a pair of porcelain cups. They seemed to both have the same thought at the same time, and Summer smiled sheepishly as he picked out a better option for her. "Thanks," she said, as the bowl was placed upon the table and her tea was poured. At the first sniff, her wide-eyed expression betrayed her. It was like nothing she had ever smelled before--earthy, floral, and exotic all at once. Doing her utmost best to drink as daintily as possible, she lapped up a bit. The flavor was strong, almost overpowering at first, but then gave way to faint hints of citrus and malt. "This is...incredible!" Fighting back her first urge to simply down the entire bowl in one go, she instead forced herself to sip slowly, savoring its unique flavor. Hmm. Maybe she could get used to the "civilized" lifestyle, after all.

Briefly, his eyes closed as he took a sip, savoring the flavor. A soft sigh afterwards relaxed his shoulders, but he did not let himself relax more than that, lest he ruin his posture. A small smile pressed against the ceramic before he pulled the cup away and returned it to its small, matching plate. "I'm glad you like it," he hummed, pleased that his brewing skills were enough to win over a first time tea drinker. He had chosen the leaves based on what he expected someone without an experienced tongue would like. It cut out more than half of the tea leaves, most being too bitter or 'bland' to others.
Lavender stood for a moment and returned to his desk. Bending over slightly, he pulled out one of the drawers and pulled out a small stack of papers. Closing the drawer, he returned to the sitting area, his quill and ink vial following close behind. "Normally, we have a test for each potential applicant to complete before we allow them to receive a guild badge. However, due to current circumstances, we have waived the entrance exam for the time being."
Grabbing the quill from the air, he dipped it in ink before filling out the form. "Instead, you will be on a trial period of one week while accompanied by a current member of the guild. They will show you the ropes and help you better accommodate to life here in Colbagne."
Laven lifted his eyes from the parchment and settled his gaze across the table on Summer. "You will still receive a badge as a formality, and just in case you run into any trouble. If, by the end of the trial period, you wish to leave the guild, you may do so by simply handing in your badge to the receptionists in the front lobby." He glanced back down and pulled the top page off the small stack, setting it on the coffee table. "Otherwise, once your trial period is up, you will become a full-fledge apprentice at the guild and assigned a partner, should you not find anyone to choose yourself."
The tip of the quill was moving on its own now as Lavender released it to wave over a sponge pad dyed red with ink. "If you find these terms agreeable," the quill pulled away as he leaned over the coffee table, setting the paper down beside the tea bowl. The ink covered sponge floated beside it, not quite touching the table to prevent staining. "Then, please, sign with your pawprint." He had already written out Summer's name on the line. [attr="class","info-base"] Summer looked on curiously as he collected a few papers and an inkpot, which floated in his wake as he returned to the table. It was to be expected that she would have had to prove herself in some fashion to join the guild, but her head took on an inquisitive tilt as he explained why that wasn't going to happen for now. "Current cir...oh! You mean all the strange Pokemon showing up out of nowhere?" Even out in the wilderness, news had still reached her pack of the odd occurrence, and almost immediately upon entering Colbagne proper, she had overheard two Pokemon discussing it amongst themselves. It wasn't every day that amnesiacs fell from the sky, after all. According to the gossip, it was the guild who was taking these strange folk in off the street, feeding and sheltering them while they recovered. Perhaps she'd be able to meet one of these strangers for herself, then. She almost considered asking him more, if they had discovered a reason why all these Pokemon were cropping up, but he was already bringing the hovering inkpot closer with a wave of his hand and asking her to sign the contract.
Conflicting emotions still swirled within the Houndoom's mind. She wanted this, she was sure she did. She wanted to help people, and to become stronger and protect others against the dangers of the world, be it from the dungeons themselves or from those with ill intent--like her pack. But more than anything, she was terrified of failing, of disappointing the guild. Even though she knew they weren't going to simply toss her into the deep end and expect her to sink or swim, she was still afraid that she lacked the conviction to be a good explorer. "Not good enough" was something that had haunted her since her adolescent days at the bottom of the clan hierarchy.
But...she wouldn't know unless she tried, right?
She wanted to try.
With a new conviction, she leaned forward and raised her paw to press it into the sponge, then briefly set it down on the paper's signature line. Drawing her paw away, the inky impression of a three-toed canid print was left on the paper. She was nervous, certainly, but at the same time, she couldn't help but feel excited. This was the start of a new life for her, the possibilities were endless. "Thank you, sir," she said eagerly, "I'll give it my all-you can be sure of that."

It was a little surprising that someone from out of the city knew of them, but he supposed it should be a given. They had fallen all over Niphios; of course word would spread outside the walls. "Precisely. Most of them joined the Guild, so space is tight." Ah, right. Housing. The Guild was never meant to hold so many Pokemon. Most were just apprentices, so there had always been some room when new recruits came around.
A look of thought crossed his features. "Will you be requiring a place to stay? Our beds are full, but I can make arrangements within the city if need be." He had already been setting up the fallen Pokemon with 'foster families' of sorts. It would be cheaper to find someone willing to give Summer a vacant room than spending money on an inn.
Lavender waited patiently as the Houndoom struggled over whether or not she would sign the contract. It was in such circumstances that he wished he could be blissfully oblivious to the emotions of others. However, it also let him know if something was amiss, if he needed to be on guard at a moment's notice, or if he needed to say something to change the course of a conversation. Thankfully, Summer seemed to have motivated herself.
A rag pulled from somewhere within the room and presented itself to the new recruit so she could wipe off the remaining ink. Lavender stood and reached over the table, pulling the contract away. "I look forward to seeing your 'all', Summer." Retreating to his desk, he set the parchment down to let the ink dry before opening one of the drawers. He pulled out a badge before returning and placed it on the table before her. "Your trial period begins now. Feel free to explore the Guild while you wait for your assigned guide." [attr="class","info-base"][googlefont="Cinzel"] The darkest hour is lonely, but leads you to the day Press on, the light is on its way Her bright expression was briefly dimmed as he brought up something she hadn't thought to consider herself. "I...didn't think of that," she admitted, "but I could stay anywhere, really! I don't want to be a bother." If need be, she'd even dig a den outside. Hopefully, though, he would be able to find somewhere for her to stay for now. That problem could be resolved later, anyway. She was officially a member of the Explorers' Guild!
She hurried wiped the ink off her paw, leaving the cloth smudged in red, and watched as he rose with his ever-present grace and glided over to his paper-covered desk. When her eyes fell upon the small badge he retrieved, she felt her heart jump with excitement. Lavender returned to the table, and she took it gently, almost reverently in her teeth, then turned her head back to nose open one of her saddlebags and store the badge safely inside it. "Thank you," she said to him once again, and meant it. For all her hesitation and nervousness, she was excited to become part of the Guild. To help, instead of harm.
Though not psychic herself, she could nevertheless sense that this meeting was drawing to an end. She didn't want to take up any more of the Guildmaster's time than necessary, so she carefully slipped off of the chair, and dipped her head to the Gardevoir in farewell, and practically pranced out the door.
-exit Summer?-
Lavender Delacroix I wasn't sure if or how much Summer would know about the whole thing tbh, but I also didn't want to make Lav play exposition fairy too much xD

He would have to send someone to look for available housing, something affordable if someone was not gracious enough to take in a full grown canine Pokemon from the wilds. Lavender said nothing on it, keeping his thoughts to himself.
The Gardevoir bowed his head in return, a soft smile forever gracing his lips as the Houndoom left. Only when her tail had slipped out of view did the guild master allow himself to relax slightly. A sigh passed through his lips as he let his smile fall. He felt terrible for having to fabricate excuses for why the application process had changed (which had been met with some backlash from long standing members).
Ah, well, there was always the hope that things would eventually get back to normal soon enough. However long that may be... With a shake of his head, Lavender returned to his desk. The door slowly closed on its own before the hidden psychic lock latched in place, ensuring he would not be bothered for the remainder of the day.
