[attr="class","info-base"][googlefont="Cinzel"] The darkest hour is lonely, but leads you to the day Press on, the light is on its way There was something about a windy night that thrilled her. The gale rustled the treetops, making it seem as if the ancient oaks were whispering amongst themselves. Glimpsed through their boughs, a full moon hung cold and pearlescent over the wild night, like the eye of some great, unknowable beast. The denizens of the wood were either tucked away in their nests or scuttling through the underbrush, but when the deathly howl rang out through the trees, they made themselves scarce among the shadows.
The singer of the lonely song wasn't hunting, however, even though when she glanced from one side to the other, she could almost see sleek, dark memory-shapes flanking her, weaving through the trees. Troubled dreams had made for restless sleep, and after tossing and turning on her cot, she had finally allowed herself to be lured outside by the distant wail of the wind and the beckoning light of the moon. She had slipped through the guildhall's gate out into the fields surrounding Colbagne to watch the tall grass dance and shimmer in the moonlight. Her nerves sung with energy in response, and she knew she wouldn't be able to sleep until she had exhausted herself too much to dwell on the things troubling her. And so she had begun to run, until the meadows gave way to deep forest. It was simple, primal impulse that had led her to howl, her wordless song embodying her frustrations and fears, yet asserting to the void of the night sky that she existed still. She remembered how the pack would howl together, their pride and power telling every Pokemon for miles to be wary. Some part of her still missed that, and it was this part that she was trying to exhaust and suppress in her wild gallop.
Summer finally came to a stop within a clearing, jaws hanging agape to permit a faint steam to waft from her mouth as she panted. The chill of the night air had sunk deep into her bones, a numbing relief. She wasn't sure where she was now, but the city still had to be in the vague direction she had come from. As her breathing began to quiet once more, she raised her head and looked about, taking in the thick, ancient greenery around her. It was a pretty place.
She didn't feel like going back to Colbagne just yet, so she sat back and looked up to the sky, searching the stars for familiar constellations.

[attr="class","box1"]The late hours of the night were most certainly the hound's element, dark typing aside. He'd never been much of a morning person and tended to prefer avoiding the hours where the sun shone brightest. Far too much of a headache! He only really endured it when it was necessary for a job, but even then he'd never be happy about it. So him being on thr prowl this evening was certainly nothing new, with Ares on the hunt for a meal befitting for a ruthless outlaw in the form of some poor, defenseless pokemon he'd startle from their nests. Course, it became apparent he wasn't the only canine in the area at this hour, as the howl had him pausing, trying to zero in on the direction it had come from. It was potential competition, after all, so it was best to have an idea of where they could come from... or where he should head if he wanted to take them out.
Ares huffed a bit, tail lashing behind him as he weighed in his options before he'd start to make his way towards where the lonely song had come from. He certainly had no trouble just bursting right in, headfirst, and taking out anyone who stood in his path, but he was also capable of the more stealthy hunt, using his dark coat to his advantage as he stalked his way through the forest, crimson eyes searching for any movement while his nose twitched, looking for any peculiar scents.
With no luck finding anything straight away, his target either lying low in wait or simply settled down for the evening, he'd give a gruff to himself before deciding to return the call, his sound haunting, a predator taunting his prey, delivering them the grave decision of either bolting and risk being chased or hunkering down and hoping the Houndoom wouldn't find them. Ares would let the sound echo in the night air, tilting his head, waiting for the telltale sound of a creature scurrying away, or perhaps even a challenging howl back from the other predator hunting these woods. Whatever the case, he intended to advance onward at the first sign of life.
"Come out, come out wherever you are," he cooed in a mocked sing-song intonation. | [attr="class","atag"]Tag: Summer |

[attr="class","info-base"][googlefont="Cinzel"] The darkest hour is lonely, but leads you to the day Press on, the light is on its way For a while, the wind and the leaves were the only sounds in the clearing. Even the usual night chorus of bug Pokemon was quiet for the time, leaving Summer to study the stars and watch clouds roll across the face of the moon in peace. That peace was abruptly shattered as a baleful cry echoed through the air--another howl. The familiar sound snapped Summer out of her reverie, and she leaped to her feet, gaze darting across the clearing's edge. She was frozen, not even daring to breathe. The thick hackles of fur running down her spine were raised in unease, and her tail was stiff but for the arrowhead-tip, which twitched back and forth intermittently. She knew her own kind, and there was no mistaking that another Houndoom had sent up the call.
Her immediate thought was that it was someone from her homeland, the rocky foothills beneath the Frozen Rise, and an icy knot of apprehension twisted her guts. Her brother had thrown her out of the clan, threatening to tear her to pieces if she ever showed her face in their territory again. Yet this was about as far from their range as she could be, why would anyone bother hunting her down all the way here? It was illogical, but the funny thing about fear was that it didn't care about logic. She couldn't shake the chilling feeling that she was the hunted here, not the hunter as she was so used to being. It wasn't a pleasant experience at all.
The lithe female sniffed the air, but the wind made it difficult to catch any scent at all, let alone discern where the other Pokemon was. She certainly didn't intend to answer the bay, even with the challenging edge it had carried. Whoever was out there was looking for a fight, and if they wanted to play tough and stake out the woods as theirs, she wouldn't rise to the bait.
Her posture was stiff-legged and uneasy as she slunk away from the meadow's center, making for the comforting shadows underneath the trees, where she could more easily hide. Now she regretted travelling so far from Colbagne. Which direction had she come from? She had lost her orientation when she was startled, and these woods were unfamiliar to her. It would be just her luck if she escaped a would-be aggressor only to end up lost. She paused and looked around, trying to find a path or other landmark she could use to orient herself, when her eyes fell upon a dark form not far from her position. Moonlight gleamed on the same raked-back horns and bony armor adorning her own body, and her breath caught in her throat. The other Houndoom looked like they were facing away from her, but they were still far too close for comfort, especially when they crooned tauntingly to the darkness. Oh yeah, they were definitely looking for her, which meant she definitely didn't want to be found. Summer went low, her belly brushing the leaf litter, and did her best to crawl away as quickly and quietly as she could--pity for her the two didn't go well together.

[attr="class","box1"]Quiet. Almost too quiet, in fact. Ares sniffed about. On one hand, he wasn't exactly the most patient of creatures, tending to get bored quite easily, the anticipation that came with the hunt was a little more tolerable. The longer he had to wait, the more satisfying it would be when he had his prey right where he wanted.
The hound had yet to realize said prey was rather close, though he did smell something, which had him taking in a deep breath, releasing a plume of smoke and ashes with a dark chuckle. As the other hound crawled away, the crinkle of old dried leaves had captured his attention, causing him to turn and face the direction the sound had come from. It took a moment to realize the shadow was actually a form, and he couldn't help but smirk wryly at the sight. "Really?"
Fortunately, he hadn't moved to give chase... yet. Obviously it would be much more fun if she'd actually tried to make a run for it. Still, for now, he'd give her the chance, perhaps out of some feigned respect for a fellow Houndoom. "Aren't you a little too big to be cowering away like a scared little Whimsur?"
"A little pathetic, don't you think?" he growled. | [attr="class","atag"]Tag: Summer |

[attr="class","info-base"][googlefont="Cinzel"] The darkest hour is lonely, but leads you to the day Press on, the light is on its way In truth, she hadn't really been expecting to be able to get away so easily. Nevertheless, she still flinched as the male's voice, dripping with contempt, froze her in place. For a moment, she considered bolting, hoping to catch him by surprise and use those few precious moments to outpace him if he gave chase. The idea galled her, though. Was she really so afraid of her own kind as to flee from them without a word?
Slowly, she straightened up, keeping her eyes locked to him. Her head was held level with her body as she eyed him warily, the motion not aggressive, but not supplicative either. She was sizing him up like a beast assessing a possible threat. He was bigger than her, with horns that raked back sharply. Several faded scars adorned his body, with the most noticeable being three deep marks over his muzzle, cutting into his lip. Scars were a common sight among her tribe, often shown off as badges of honor, but she couldn't help but wonder what kind of encounter had left him with such a grisly wound--or what kind of fighter he was if he had been able to come away from it.
To her relief, at least, he wasn't anyone she knew from her tribe, nor did he seem to recognize her. That hopefully ruled out the possibility he was here on her brother's behalf, but that didn't mean he wasn't still a threat. Indeed, there was nothing but scorn in his voice as he spoke, and a wince briefly broke through her scowl as he insulted her. "I'm not pathetic," she replied, quiet and sullen, "I'm just not looking for a fight, is all." Summer cocked her head, regarding him with flinty eyes. "Are these your woods, or do you just like to go around waylaying others for fun?"

[attr="class","box1"]He expected her to run, yelping for aid or begging for mercy, or maybe even calling on Arceus themselves to rain judgement right down on top of him. Instead she turned and met his gaze, the male showing off his fangs in a crooked smile, a mixture of amusement and minor disdain. It was rather strange, seeing someone like him, except the exact opposite. It put a nasty taste in his mouth, honestly, made him wonder if he would have been just as weak if he hadn't changed, toughened up to survive the cruelties of this world. A nice reminder... but also sickening.
It might not have been a stretch to assume she had her own little experience upon seeing him, given how hard she was staring at him, taking in his features. Then again, maybe it was just the scars that caught her eye. Everyone had to ask about them at least once, he supposed. But for now, it seemed this timid little girl was going to get enough backbone to try to argue.
"Whatever you have to tell yourself to sleep better at night, princess," he shook his head. "But you might not want crawl away like some bug at the first sign of danger. Who knows what might have happened if someone worse had come along?" He chuckled once more, sarcasm practically dripping off his tongue. As arrogant as he could be, he wouldn't be so bold as to give himself such a title though, in all honesty. He'd met some pretty nasty pokemon in his career. He was just one who was actually willing to get his paws dirty instead of having to rely on weak-minded and disposable lackeys.
The question had him tilting his head a bit, settling down on his haunches then and not looking too terribly worried or perceiving her as a threat. In fact, he once again expected her to just bolt now that he 'had his guard down'. "They might as well be, as far as you ought to be concerned." He considered the woods his hunting grounds at the very least and had no intentions of sharing. But considering how she was acting, he almost had to wonder if she even had the guts for that. "But... yeah, pretty much. That or if they are small enough, I make a snack out of them," he smirked, eyeing her up and down again. "Could probably make a meal out of you, even though you look like skin and bones." He was joking, right? Probably. It depended on how hungry he was, and fortunately for her, she didn't really look all that appetizing. | [attr="class","atag"]Tag: Summer |

[attr="class","info-base"][googlefont="Cinzel"] The darkest hour is lonely, but leads you to the day Press on, the light is on its way He might not have hailed from her tribe, but his swaggering manner certainly reminded her of them. They would have scorned her for trying to escape an altercation like this too. Her lips tightened at his offhanded dismissal, muzzle wrinkling without quite becoming a proper snarl yet, even when he insinuated that he wasn't the worst thing these woods could have produced. "Oh?" she drawled disdainfully, "Then I suppose I ought to thank you for finding me before 'someone worse' did? I think I can take care of myself." In contrast to her guarded posture, he seemed perfectly at ease, but it was a tactic she had seen before. A fight for dominance wasn't always an actual battle; body language and intimidation could be just as effective. Before, when she ran with the pack, she wouldn't have contested such bids, but this was different. The guild was her "pack" now, and this hound wasn't her guildmaster.
She remained standing even as he sat back languidly. With a soft scoff, a puff of steam rose from her nostrils, a product of the caustic flames that churned in her gut. "Funny, I could have sworn all of this belonged to that king fellow..." The mention of hunting other Pokemon didn't disturb her as deeply as it might have a townie, but at his idle threat to do the same to her, her head lifted abruptly, and already-oversized hackles rose just a bit more. Her tail's nervous swishing grew more pronounced, but she didn't back down just yet. "I already told you I'm not looking for a fight," she rumbled, "But that doesn't mean I won't defend myself. Besides," she added, a slightly-unsure smirk on her lips, "if a member of the explorers' guild were to go missing in 'your' woods, you might bring down unwanted attention on yourself."
Privately, she wasn't at all sure how the guild would react, if at all, if one of their new recruits went missing, but he didn't have to know that.

[attr="class","box1"]"No 'thanks' are necessary," he brushed off nonchalantly, feigning ignorance to the very obvious sarcasm. As for her taking care of herself? "I can't say I'm all that convinced, to be perfectly frank. You seem to be all bark and no bite," he concluded, snapping his fangs cheekily, flecking a bit of drool into the grass between them before licking at his muzzle. He really was quite hungry. Fortunately he was more entertained at the moment than desperate for a meal. Though there was the ever present risk of him getting bored and deciding to turn on her if she decided to linger for too long.
That all said, she was standing he ground now, perhaps a bit irritated by his barrage of pointed insults. Now if she actually did something about it, that would actually be impressive. Instead, he just snorted to himself at the display before releasing a bored yawn, further cementing how he was feeling about the other Houndoom and her attempts to look more intimidating than she really was.
"And I've heard you the first time," he responded curtly, interrupting her rumbling. Just because she wasn't looking didn't mean he had to back down by any stretch. If would be more fun to have an actual challenge, certainly, but if he just wanted to rough up some random pokemon in the woods, then why should he pass up the opportunity? If anything, what she said next only made the idea far more tempting.
"The guild?" Ares rose a paw to his chest with a gasp, looking rather intimidated now by her name dropping such a powerful collection of pokemon. "O-oh no... I'm so sorry..." Had he not been sitting, his tail certainly would have been tucked between his legs. But then... "If I'd only known sooner... I would have ripped out your throat the moment I laid eyes on you." The act ceased, the 'scared' hound giving a devilish grin, chuckling to himself as he rose to stand, stepping forward to begin closing the distance between them, his movement slow, calculated, and certainly meant to intimidate as those sharp eyes of his bore into her.
"Fortunately for me, I don't see anyone else from the guild around here. And I'm quite good at making pokemon just disappear." If only she knew!
"So, please... Do continue, little girl. Tell me just how 'scared' I should be of you and your merry little band of suckers."

[attr="class","info-base"][googlefont="Cinzel"] The darkest hour is lonely, but leads you to the day Press on, the light is on its way Her bristling posture wilted slightly as he responded to her threat with feigned terror, clearly not intimidated in the slightest. He finished his mockery with a snarled threat of his own that made her gulp nervously, the steely glint of determination in her eyes faltering noticeably. With almost-feline grace, he rose from his spot and began to stalk towards her, prompting her to take a few steps backwards as her nerve finally cracked. Summer growled in warning as he drew closer, but it was glaringly obvious that her attempts at aggression weren't accomplishing much.
As he continued to approach, steadily closing the distance between them despite her backwards stumbling, the she-hound's heart was beginning to race. Her eyes darted about, seeking an escape from the now potentially-dangerous situation she had found herself in. She was pretty fast, maybe she could make a break for it--better to get away with her bruised pride than not get away at all.
As her eyes went back to her aggressor, however, something shifted inside her. For a brief moment, his smirking visage was replaced by the face of another, one much more familiar. A face that had tormented her since their puppyhood, graduating from bullying her off the scraps of food their parents would bring them to lording newly-won leadership over her and their fellows. Coward, he would call her. And every time she had just taken it.
The Houndoom's legs were trembling. She was terrified, and looking back on the moment, she still couldn't explain why she had suddenly decided to act with such utter lunacy. But even the most timid of beasts, when cornered and pushed to their limit, would lash out.
Summer's backwards steps suddenly reversed as she instead quickly strode forward, closing the last few feet of distance between them. Shoulders were rolled forward as she did so, and her neck curved sharply, bringing her horns to bear. If she was successful in what she intended to do, the silence of the night would be broken by a rattling clash as their horns came together, leaving their eyes scant inches from the other's. There was an answer to his challenge glowing in her eyes now, a spark of unexpected and momentary courage that she was almost afraid to let go of, lest she allow herself to realize just how painfully stupid she was acting.
"After the threats you've been making?" she growled, "Pretty scared."

[attr="class","box1"]Like a predator, Ares sauntered forward, digging his claws into the dirt with each solid step, his tail raised, tip twitching about like a rattling Ekans. Her growls truly fell on deaf ears at this point, the warnings not being heeded. It was no secret that he didn't believe she was even capable of putting up a fight, so why should he pay those little grumbles of protests any sort of mind? Especially not when she was very clearly looking for an escape route.
But then, something clicked. For a split second, he could see a shift in her gaze, and then suddenly she was darting forward. Ares was fortunately quick enough to respond, their horns meeting and the other hound quite a bit closer now. It actually surprised him a bit, that dark smirk of his having fallen... but only for a moment. As their collision echoed out of existence through the trees, his grin returned, wider and perhaps a bit more crazed looking, even reaching his eyes as the amusement became very apparent.
"Now there's that fire in your eyes. I was starting to think you were nothing but an empty shell of our kind," he admitted, not yet breaking from the position they were in. In fact, he pressed against her horns with his own, literally putting the pressure on her to continue holding her ground or risk him advancing on her and taking advantage of their close proximity. "It's kind of impressive, really," he began, able to give her that much. "But also incredibly stupid..."
With that, his little press would turn into a full-on shove as he reared his head back long enough to slam those horns into hers with as much force as he could muster, aiming to either force her back or knock her out. Whichever came first, really.
"Come on then," he taunted, "I don't think you fully got your point across." | [attr="class","atag"]Tag: Summer |

[attr="class","info-base"][googlefont="Cinzel"] The darkest hour is lonely, but leads you to the day Press on, the light is on its way She saw it. She had caught him off-guard for a moment--but only for a moment. His brief look of surprise grew into an almost deranged-looking grin, with wrinkled muzzle and bared teeth mocking her own snarl. If anything, he practically approved of her sudden backbone, albeit in a way that reminded her of a Persian toying with a little captured bird, batting it about as long as it was still moving.
She only growled at his sardonic praise, spreading her feet across the loamy soil for traction as he pushed back against her horns. Her neck was stiffened as she fought to hold her position against the larger Houndoom, and her hindclaws were digging deep into the dirt. Putting all her effort into pushing forward proved to be her undoing, for he suddenly shifted his weight backwards, leaving her without the support to throw her weight against. She stumbled forward a couple of inches before she could catch herself, leaving her open to his violent counterattack.
Most Pokemon with horns were built to be able to use them, but even so, their heads collided with enough unexpected force to send Summer reeling backwards as starbursts of color exploded behind her eyes. She only barely managed to avoid pitching over by splaying her legs out and doing her best to stay upright while the forest stopped tilting wildly around her. She was stunned, but could dimly hear his derisive challenge. No, she wasn't out yet. Summer braced herself and shook her head back and forth, doing her best to dispel the dizziness plaguing her. "Right..." she growled quietly, glaring in his direction. Her turn.
Summer whipped about to face him once more, tail slicing the air behind her. There was no hesitation before she charged him once more, bringing her horns down to bear. Rather than lock crowns with him again, however, Summer's ram was aimed lower, for his chest--right where his skull-shaped "medallion" grew. A bash to the sternum was a good way to knock the wind out of an opponent, assuming one could land the hit in the first place.
@ares
So, how do you picture this going down? I was thinking that they fight hard for a few posts, but end up in a stalemate. Ares could probably take her down eventually, being the more-experienced fighter, but she'd still do her best to hold her own, so the potential injuries might not be worth it to him, unless you want to go all the way.

[attr="class","box1"]It connected. There was no denying that it knocked her over a bit, the hound struggling and barely managing to keep upright, but not quite managing to knock her out. Ah well, it was better that way, he decided. If she was rendered unconscious so quickly, he'd have been rather disappointed, especially after managing to get a spark of raw anger out of her. No, now he just wanted to see the extent of it, see how messed up this particular Houndoom was. She was obviously rather slim and lanky, but he was convinced the influence of being a member of the Guild probably didn't help matters either. After all, if you had to namedrop the Guild to invoke fear, then perhaps you weren't all that tough to begin with. He was sure those self-righteous assholes loved to exploit such a weakness.
She still had a bit of fire though, and she made that clear by making another charge. Whether it was her having been stunned or him just being more prepared for such an act this time around, Ares would manage to avoid the blunt force to his chest, though only barely as one of her horns would graze his shoulder. What she may have lacked in strength, she clearly made up for it with her speed, that was for sure. He'd have to be mindful of that, obviously, but he didn't appear too worried. In fact, as she put herself in another vulnerable space, being so close in range, he'd end up retaliating by going to bite down at the back of her lowered neck. He was probably more likely to get a mouthful of scruff, but that was fine. As long as he got a hold of her.
((yeah, *spoilers*: at this point he's just trying to make a message, so once he roughs her up a bit, whether she gets some good hits in him or not, he'll let her run off to lick her wounds once he's satisfied and/or she loses her steam)) | [attr="class","atag"]Tag: Summer |
