Festivals were a great time for everyone. It really was a special sight, to watch 'mons dressed to the nines, hear the excitement of the kids playing in the plaza... and for this festival in particular, to see all the lanterns clustered together, creating a twinkling sky. Despite the significance of the day, it was filled with a lightness that helped to balance the somberness of the theme. Yeah... festivals were a great time.[break][break]
And for a merchant... it was a great way to get a bit of extra gold on the side. Especially for a merchant that wasn't bound to a single location.[break][break]
Like the years before, Anatole went early to set up a stall in the plaza, smushed next to the other vendors and decorated with the customary paper lanterns. Though it was mostly for business, he couldn't help but reflect on his younger years of participating in the festival, how excited he'd get to see the statue and try all the delicious food. The memories were tinged with sadness, now, but they were still happy enough to tug one of the corners of his mouth up.[break][break]
He still remembered his mother dressing him up for the occasion, favoring the kimonos on her family's side. They were very opulent and flashy in an 'i'm rich' way, and that was nice for some people, but as that part of his life was over now, Anatole settled for a more simple, modest number, red with gold accents. Dressing up wasn't really his style, but it was special day.[break][break]
And as it was a special day, his stall offered treats that came from his homeland; a variety of sweets he made the day before, that included Magikarp-shaped pastries filled with sweet Pecha berry paste, colorful, sticky balls on a skewer, and Oran berries dipped in a sweet sauce. Something for kids and adults to enjoy.[break][break]
Anatole crossed his arms and leaned against the wood, quietly clicking one of his pincers as he waited for customers.

If they squinted, Mingzhu could practically convince themself they'd been magically transported back home. The details were different if one looked, of course - the people, the cut and make of the clothes, the offerings at the various stalls - but the Jiang influence on Nou Rega was plain to see.

Mingzhu sighed quietly as a little twinge of disappointment cut through their excitement. They loved festivals, of course. And they'd known what to expect long before they arrived at Festival Plaza, decked out in an old but immaculately upkept crimson robe. But the whole point of moving to a different country was to see new things! Horribly unfair of this to be their very first festival in Niphios, before they even had a chance to miss home.

Still, squeezing into the crowd was all it took to banish their misgivings. Soon they were darting from stall to stall, cooing at colorful advertisements and trying to decide between impossible carnival games. A ring toss booth offering a huge and fantastically ugly stuffed Teddiursa drew their attention; they scuttled toward it, only to be immediately and gleefully distracted by the snack vendor one stall to the left. "Oh, these are adorable!" They squeaked at the neat row of Magikarp-shaped pastries on display, all six eyes practically sparkling with excitement. "How much?" They looked up at the stall owner, a Scizor in a modest red-and-gold robe, and somehow managed to brighten even further. "Hey, we match!" They laughed, twirling to show off the embroidery on the back of their robe - Ho-oh, mid-flight among a burst of golden flame. "What are the odds?"
