[break]Upon request, Riley attended the ball proper as an extra set of eyes in order to help keep the peace. Without being fully accustomed to the traditions and history of this city, he wasn't aware of the extra security measures being taken as opposed to those taken on a regular basis. He also wouldn't have been able to tell a desirable from an undesirable. To top it all off, he felt severely underdressed for this banquet. He wasn't the only person simply wearing the guild badge as both a motif and a decorative pin, but it definitely distinguished him from the people who were here to celebrate versus those who were here out of business or obligation.[break][break] Needless to say, he was incredibly uncomfortable. When Riley was typically nervous, it often rested on his brow. He understood the basic concept of security, and how even a weakling like himself could be valuable in simply watching. Statistically speaking, folks are less likely to commit a crime if they know they're being watched. But who or what was he supposed to be looking for? [break][break] Eye on the prize, he thought. This was all just a game. Something is going to happen tonight, and when it does, it'll be big, loud, and incredibly obvious. That's how these things typically work out. The question is, is this a cutscene where the greenhorn player is forced to merely watch as their Guildmaster gets assassinated? (Sorry Lavender, though you look...really nice?) Or perhaps some big, bombastic enemy blasts in from above to announce a sinister plan? Better yet, could Riley really just stand by and watch if worst comes to worst? What else was he supposed to do? According to his mentor he was weaker than most children in Niphios.[break][break] Riley sighed and watched as the dancers twirled, unsure of what to do with his hands. He should have nabbed something to eat. His belly grumbled in agreement and his glance darted towards the hors d'oeuvres. He could leave his post for a second and snatch something up. It's not like all hell was about to break loose if one tiny, virtually useless set of eyes peeled their attention away from the action for just a moment. [attr="class","vncredticks"] »[attr="class","vnnotes"]...peanut patrol time.

[attr="class","info-post"]Humboldt glided between the banquet tables, a champagne flute in one tentacle to discourage intrepid dancers not put off by their badge or demeanor. They knew how to dance, of course, but they rarely did at balls; the opportunity to watch the wave of gossip and meaningful glances ripple out from every announced noble was too good to waste. Besides, they were technically on security detail. Though today, their gaze was drawn to the edges of the dance floor, where a scattering of guild recruits stood at attention. Several of them were faces they had never even seen. Their eyes narrowed. Lavender was usually so forthcoming with information when it came to Humboldt, but he'd remained tight-lipped about this recent plague of children falling from the sky. Of course it was possible the Guild Master didn't know anything about it either, but the long hours he spent with the new recruits made them doubt it. Ah, what they wouldn't give for his emotion-sensing abilities! But it was not to be, so they would just have to collect the evidence on their own. There was nothing suspicious about striking up a friendly chat with another guard, was there? They sized up the closest guild recruit - a Sableye, shifting about more like a guilty child than volunteer security. He would do. They headed over, the embroidered hem of their black and purple gown hovering just above the ballroom floor. "New recruit?" They greeted, keeping their smile carefully casual. "There's no need to be so nervous. It is a party, after all."Riley

[break]Just as Riley's claw gingerly gripped a small puff pastry from the tray, Humboldt spoke up to his side and nearly stopped his heart on the spot. It certainly didn't help, as the Sableye scrambled to hide the snack behind his back like a common thief, that this fellow looked like a terrifying squid demon hovering a few inches off the ground. He barely maintained his composure, that is to say, he didn't scream this time. He simply stared at the Malamar and stammered out a response.[break][break] "Y-yeah! Yes! New recruit!" he squeaked. Had he been any more embarrassed than usual he might have blushed. Humboldt was truly terrifying. He was sure they didn't actually mean to be terrifying, but it was what it was. Riley felt like he was being sized up as a potential meal rather than greeted casually. The Sableye reached with his free hand to loosen a collar that wasn't there. That prompted him to answer faster, hopefully to distract from his quirky behavior. "Sorry, I'm still not used to um...crowds."[break][break] Who was he kidding? He finally found a dance that was even MORE of a trainwreck than prom. This was like being dumped by Christina all over again. Back then he just wanted to die. Now he actually felt like he was going to die.[break][break] He fidgeted with the pastry behind his back, trying not to stare at them. The gown was kind of redundant in his opinion, if only because the creature itself already had this adorned appearance. Riley cleared his throat and corrected his posture--this could be someone pretty important. The dress, the big imposing mass of tentacles? This could be the quest he was looking for.[break][break] "So like, eh...you don't think anything bad is going to happen tonight, do you?"[attr="class","vncredticks"] »[attr="class","vnnotes"]...boy, you're gonna end up being a suspect.

| Oh, dear. Humboldt knew some of the newcomers were a little jumpy, but this just seemed excessive. They floated backward a few inches, hopefully out of range of the kid's near-panic attack. This was exactly the kind of person they disliked dealing with... but on the other hand, all the weird behaviour was pretty much a guarantee he knew something he wasn't saying. They would have to proceed delicately to keep him from bolting for the exit.
"Pardon me," they said, trying to keep the annoyance out of their voice. "I thought you'd seen me coming, but I suppose someone of my stature ought to be a little more careful than that, hm? My apologies. I don't believe I've seen you around the guild yet? I'm Humboldt, our Guild Master Lavender Delacroix's personal secretary. Pleased to make your acquaintance." Extending a tentacle for a handshake at this moment would probably give the kid a heart attack, so they settled for a small, polite bow.
They blinked curiously at the Sableye's question. Although somewhat... ambiguously worded, it seemed a perfectly reasonable thing for a nervous first-time guard to ask. But was there more to it? He wasn't acting shifty because he planned on engineering said 'something bad', was he? If so, asking so directly seemed like a rather stupid idea, but they'd long since learned not to put anything past people.
"I don't expect anything will happen," they responded carefully, watching his reaction from behind their champagne flute. "But the royal family doesn't like to take any unnecessary risks when it comes to events with so many people in attendance, so here we are. Even if something does, I don't think a new recruit like yourself would be expected to fight. Get help, sound the alarm, maybe." They themself, on the other hand... who knows. Would it be too much to just hang back and let whatever it was happen? Fighting some bandits would honestly be a refreshing change of pace. "I wouldn't worry about it. No big public celebration events like this where you're from? I'd have thought this was all rather standard."

[break]Okay, so they spoke English——good. So far so good. More importantly, they said 'Pardon Me', implying manners and a degree of polite behavior practiced by a civilized sentient being with undisclosed motives. Riley appeared to relax a little, even going so far as to let his hands drop to his sides. It'd be rude to stuff his maw with food while they carried on a conversation, but at least he was no longer actively hiding it.[break][break] "Humboldt," Riley repeated, tilting his head. "Oh! Yeah, someone mentioned your name at the guild. You're a, er...Malamar?" He tried his best to commit all these races or species to memory. He had a feeling they carried greater importance than bloodline and abilities alone. "It's a pleasure to meet you."[break][break] When Humboldt bowed, Riley consciously bowed right back. It was awkward and clearly a case of 'monkey see, monkey do', but the Sableye was trying not to be rude any more than he had been.[break][break] "That's what I thought," Riley responded at first, in regards to his abilities in an actual emergency situation. While Humboldt explained the customs, and they all made perfect sense, the young recruit was mainly looking for plot hooks, quest bait, story lines, more block and tackle puns, etc. So instead of being shifty and nervous he went rather calm and analytical. He was actually taking a moment to admire the detail here. Humboldt actually had some personality to them, a manner and a mood. Unlike NPCs in your average game, the ones here are pretty relatable. If the situation wasn't so dire, Riley would certainly appreciate the fine work.[break][break] When a more personal question was posed in response, Riley's shoulders sagged. "Not really. I mean, they do, but I haven't really attended any. I went to a convention a couple of years ago but..." He trailed off, momentarily sullen, but it wore away when he changed the subject. "I was just wondering if there has been a reason to justify it. Like extra security because someone called in a threat." Then, as if getting a little self-conscious about his line of questioning, he cleared his throat and backed it up. "I'm asking 'cos I know something weird's going on. I've overheard people at the guild mutter something about a prophecy, but nobody wants to talk about it."[break][break] It was a power move, but he felt it was as good a time as any to make it. He didn't give away what he was yet, though he suspected if Humboldt was Lavender's secretary, they would already know. He was counting on exposition of any kind, or a flat denial, or anything that could give him more information. [attr="class","vncredticks"] »[attr="class","vnnotes"]...or maybe get him tossed into a dungeon.

| It was a bit odd that the Sableye hadn't deigned to introduce himself in return, but Humboldt was so relieved that he'd calmed down that they looked past it. They really didn't know what they would do if he kept panicking through the entire conversation. "Ah - that's right. You have a good memory," they commented. If he was unfamiliar with their species, that likely ruled out any of the nearby island nations. The 'convention' might be a better clue, if they had any idea what kind of place would let nervous children into an important meeting. They sipped at their champagne as he rambled, which quickly turned out to be a mistake; his last point about something strange going on nearly made them spill the entire thing over their gown.
"...Excuse me for a moment." They set the flute down on the nearest table, then turned back to give the Sableye their full attention. They shouldn't have let first impressions make them take him so lightly. Could he have guessed their goal in approaching him? They quickly ran the entire conversation so far through their head, and came up empty of evidence either way. If it was a honest question, they stood to gain a lot from returning the honesty, but they hesitated to play all their cards in the very first conversation with someone. They didn't even know his name yet.
"What prophecy would that be?" They asked, head cocked to the side in mock thoughtfulness. "I don't believe I've heard anything of the sort, though admittedly I have been rather busy with paperwork lately." Honest, yet vague enough as to not give anything away - they hoped. "I'm not aware of any call for extra security, and a few guards like this is nothing out of the ordinary for a ball. Though if you're right, that does sound rather ominous."

[break]Mention of the prophecy had quite an effect on Humboldt. Riley's keen eyes caught on to the slight lurch from the Malamar nearly choking down their wine. He tabled that reaction, as well as their response. Maybe this kid wouldn't be able to wrestle his way out of a paper bag, but that's why he always played Wizards and Artificers in Dungeons and Dragons. He wasn't about that brute strength life; you can get plenty of answers out of merely observing others and exploiting their weaknesses. Might have been mean to think about it like that, but Riley still fully believed he was trapped in a video game. None of these people were actually real; he wasn't even sure if he could actually die here, but he was far too much a coward to test that out for himself.[break][break] They were flat out denying everything, from the prophecy to the amount of guards. Riley was still only guessing that the security was buffed up more than necessary, but Humboldt was likely lying about knowledge of the prophecy and possibly lying about everything else too. Whereas most would find this type of social politic daunting, it seemed to awaken a glint in Riley's eye. He loved this garbage. Players at his table would groan the moment someone sparked intrigue at Riley's feet.[break][break] "I suppose it's my honor to inform you then," he surmised, with far more confidence in his tone than, say, thirty seconds ago. "I know it might seem like a petty rumor, but rumors carry seeds of truth, no matter how tall the tale." God, he was using his Wizard Balthazar's influence here. He could feel Michael rolling his eyes in another dimension. "I'm just...saying. Since you're Lavender's personal secretary, you might want to look into it further." The confidence dialed back a notch. "Maybe it's because I'm new here that I picked up on it right away."[attr="class","vncredticks"] »[attr="class","vnnotes"]...boy stay in your lane.

| Humboldt had to look away in order to resist the urge to snort at the kid's suddenly pompous tone. He might have had information to hold over their head at the moment, but this was just tacky. And what kind of play was telling them to 'look into it' themself? Was he seriously not aware that this conversation was their attempt to do precisely that? Maybe he was just a dumb kid, after all.
"Maybe," they crossed their arms, adopted the injured tone of a friend left out of the loop of an important secret, "it's because you're actually involved in the strange things happening. I assume you were one of the people who fell from the sky? The Guild Master has been spending more time with you lot than me lately, and I'm his personal secretary. I figured he was keeping some sort of secret, and honestly I was surprised to hear you bring it directly to me. With how tight-lipped everyone has been lately, I would have thought he asked you all not to talk about it."
A bit of a dangerous game to remind him of the taboo, maybe, but it would take the suspicion off them after the whole champagne thing. Hopefully the Sableye would respond with actual useful information and not more vague mysterious drivel. Speaking of which, referring to him with these various epithets was getting annoying. "I don't suppose you've been forbidden to tell me your name, either? You still haven't introduced yourself."

[break]Oh no...oh, no no no. This wasn't checkmate. It wasn't even check. Humboldt was likewise leading him on to pry for more information in turn. Two minds locked in combat, and though it made Riley somewhat nervous, this was a battlefield he was far more accustomed to than an actual battlefield. He did tense up at being called out for what he was, as well as lightly chided for revealing too much, but he held on to the notion that he never did say he was human, nor did he ever claim to be from another world. Merely elsewhere. Merely an outsider.[break][break] Yet...he had no reason to lie. Humboldt was the guild's secretary, and the fact that they mentioned the event so casually means they know enough to be among the trusted. Still, they were in a public place. Riley decided against confirming or denying it for the sake of discretion.[break][break] "I'm talking about the state of Niphios, of Colbagne," the Sableye implored. "Seeing as I'm a foreigner adopted into your guild, and the Guildmaster took it upon himself to trust me, I'm only concerned about the issues that would lead someone to accepting the membership of over a dozen new recruits of mysterious origins. And clearly, you're not ignorant." He suddenly felt cold. He felt like he was calling out his teacher for making an incorrect statement in front of the whole class. Riley visibly shrank and started to rub at his arm nervously.[break][break] "Sorry...I'm...I'm really not trying to be an ass. My name is Riley." He glanced away, huffed, and looked them in the eye again. "I'm just...trying to get somebody here to lay it on straight for me. If you can't tell me anything tonight, maybe keep me in mind when you're free to talk about it. I don't like being tugged along any more than you do. We can actually be of use to one another, I think. I am an extra set of eyes after all."[attr="class","vncredticks"] »[attr="class","vnnotes"]...

| The kid hadn't been in the country for half a year and he was already trying to play politics! Humboldt raised a tentacle to their beak, half-hiding a little smile. Riley, was it? They would remember that. No matter how successful or unsuccessful his attempts turned out to be, this promised to be amusing. "No need to apologize; I understand the situation right now is, ah, rather uncertain for everyone. If you mean to say that you have concerns about the operation of the Guild, then it's my responsibility as a Guild administrator to hear you out, in as much privacy as you need, is it not?" If they were a lesser 'mon they might have winked, but as it was they settled for deepening their grin.
In any case, they'd already gotten enough tidbits from this conversation to start their own investigation in earnest. They weren't exactly in a position to demand any favours from Adarsa, but perhaps they could mention the prophecy in passing next time they crossed paths with the First Historian? And now that they knew which sections to cross-reference, a trip to the library may prove fruitful, too. "I'll endeavor to make some space in my schedule, and then I'll find you. Does that sound acceptable?" Most of their paperwork could wait, in truth, but best not to appear too eager. "In the meantime, it's been a pleasure speaking to you. I really do suggest you try to enjoy the ball. I'm sure society will hold together for a few hours while you try the buffet, hm?"

[break]The guild operations in themselves didn't intrigue Riley enough, but he had a feeling he knew where Humboldt was going with all that. Or at least...he hoped he understood correctly. Funny how he went from being terrified of the Malamar to being more annoyed. He appreciated the generosity of these people—truly, he did—but what they failed to understand was that most of these 'humans' had lives they abruptly left behind. They weren't given an opportunity to leave a note, to say any last words, or to tie up any loose ends of a sort. If Riley had such a chance, he'd surely be having more fun here, taking it easier and such. As it stood, he had no idea how long he's actually been gone for, what state his body is in, or whether or not he was even still alive. Being a ghost-type Pokemon seriously wasn't helping him cope with his fate.[break][break] Though the corners of Riley's mouth tightened into a neat little frown, he tipped his head lightly in gratitude. "Please. I know I don't owe you anything, like it's the other way around, but I have a feeling if I help you, I'd be helping myself too."[break][break] He had a lump in his throat as Humboldt reassured him, then proposed that he try enjoying the ball for what it was. Riley couldn't help but keep feeling uneasy, but he nodded regardless. "Thanks. I'll try. And you...um...you too."[break][break] If he had a hoodie on he'd hide his face about now. Why wasn't this oppressive mood fading? He felt like he had just been played before he even knew what game he was roped into. Well...fortunately a distraction would soon unfold in the form of a 'wet dog' standing on a table drinking from the communal punch bowl head down, hind up. [attr="class","vncredticks"] »[attr="class","vnnotes"]...aaaand end scene.
